The Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon and Hospital, a philanthropic organization, was instituted on May 27, 1861. It provided Union soldiers with free accomodations as their regiments passed through on their way to Washington. A separate hospital would receive any passing sick or wounded soldiers.
